Dorothy Nyakato, the architect of the Tooro Kingdom Constitution, has died.
Nyakato, aged 92, passed away on Tuesday morning at Kitante Medical Centre in Kampala.
According to a close family friend, David Kantu, Nyakato was involved in an accident in May last year and broke her leg. Kantu says that since then, she has been confined to a wheel chair. He also says that Nyakato was diabetic.

In 1996, Nyakato was appointed Minister of women, Elderly and the Disabled. She has also been a member of the Kingdom parliament under the reign of Kings Sir George Kamurasi Rukidi III, Patrick Olimi Kaboyo II and Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Nyakato who was a professional teacher taught at Kyebambe Girls’ School, Nyakasura School and other schools in Mbarara. She also translated several books to Runyoro-Rutooro language. She was also a member of the Runyoro-Rutooro orthography committee, which regulates the proper use and development of the language.
In 2012, King Oyo appointed her as his advisor on cultural affairs, a position she held until her death.
Eulogizing the deceased, Princess Elizabeth Bagaya, King Oyo’s paternal aunt, told Uganda Radio Network that it’s unfortunate that Nyakato has died before accomplishing her role of translating the Tooro Kingdom constitution into Rutooro. Princess Bagaya says that Nyakato had started translating some sections of the constitution, but the process was halted after she was involved in an accident.
Nyakato will be laid to rest on Friday at her home in Mbuzi village in West Division, Fort Portal Municipality. She is survived by one child.
