Unidentified gunmen have shot dead Uganda's Shia Muslim cleric sheikh Dactoor Abdul Qadir Muwaya. Caroline Akoth, the Mayuge District Police Commander says Muwaya was shot dead by two thugs on Christmas at his home in Buyemba village in Bukatube Sub County Mayuge district.

 
According to Akoth, the incident occurred at about 11:30pm as the deceased was returning from the mosque, which shares the same compound with Ahlul Bait Foundation School. She says that after shooting their victim, the thugs made off on a waiting motor bike and are still at large.
 
However, police is yet to establish the motive behind the attack. The deceased's son Haji Umar Bongo, the Mayuge LC V Chairperson has not yet commented on the murder as he couldn't be reached by the time of filing this story.  The deceased's body will be laid to rest later today according to his young brother Rashid Dactoor.

Dactur Abdul Qadir Muwaya joins the list of other Muslim clerics who have been shot in Uganda under unclear circumstances. Two other clerics including Sheikh Abdul Karim Ssentamu , a top leader in the Salaf community and Sheikh Abubaker Yunisu  were shot dead in Kampala and Mayuge respectively by unidentified thugs in 2012. To date, no suspect has been arrested and prosecuted in connection with the murders.
