Police Shoots Dead Two Boda Boda Riders in Kiruhura

Police have shot dead two boda boda motorcyclists from Ibanda town council in a scuffle in Kiruhura district.  They are Richard Kankiiriho and Edward Salongo, who have been operating at Kitokye and Shell stages respectively, in Ibanda Town council.

The two were shot dead on Monday afternoon after they forced their way into Kanoni police cells together with others where a suspected motorcycle thief was being held. Angry boda boda riders stormed Kanoni trading center in Kazo County Kiruhura district after receiving information that a suspected motorcycle thief had been arrested and detained at Kanoni police.

The killing of the duo angered the riders prompting them to set ablaze the houses of Iddi Dragoba, the Officer in Charge of Kanoni police post and unidentified crime preventer. They also slashed banana plantations belonging to the neighboring residents. 

Byaruhanga told URN that he had deployed additional men to prevent more chaos from breaking out in Kiruhura district. Police has also deployed heavily at Kazo health center III where the suspected boda boda thief is admitted with severe wounds inflicted on him by the angry boda boda riders. 

Ronald Mugabe, the Chairperson of Boda -Boda riders in Ibanda district has blasted police for using excessive force to calm down the motorists. The shooting of Richard Kankiiriho and Edward Salongo, brings to four the number of people killed by Police within a space of one week.

Last week, Police shot dead two people in Kasese district during clashes resulting from the disputed LC 3 elections. Kale Kayihura, the Inspector General of Police defended the shooting, saying his men acted in self defense.
