Two Children Die In Sembabule Fish Pond

Two children have drowned in a fish pond in Sembabule district. They are 10-year-old Owen Nabimanya and his 8-year-old brother, Clever Kyomugisha, both sons of Tadeo Bawendwa, a resident of Katoma village.

 
According to Bawendwa, the minors they had sent the minors to collect water from a nearby well this morning but they branched off to the pond together with two other children.

 
Bawenda says he was shocked to receive information that his sons had drowned. The remaining children were saved from drowning. Residents responded after one of the children identified as John Tushabe ran home crying after saving his colleague, Paul Twesigye who had also fallen in the pond.

He says that many people in their area are fond of going to the Kizza's pond to see fish. Mutebi, who is the Lwebitakuli sub county chairperson under Buganda the kingdom government, asks parents to desist from sending children to water sources.

The Southern Region Police Commander, Latif Zaake says they have retrieved the minor's bodies from the pond with the help of residents. He says they had directed Kizza to erect barriers around the pond to protect people from falling in it.



He says he has also directed all local leaders to mount fences on all open water sources because they are becoming death traps for both young and mature people.
