Two Drown In Lake Victoria

Two people have drowned and six others narrowly escaped death after their boat capsized in Lake Victoria on Sunday afternoon. The deceased are Mary Nabwire and Joyce Namulanda, both residents of Luminho Sub County in Busia district. Sande Egesa, a survivor told URN at Namayingo main hospital that the boat capsized after it was hit by strong wind as they approached Maninga islands in Sigulu Sub County.

He explains that, the boat that was loaded with merchandise was destined for Busiro landing site. Egesa says that he swam for about thirty minutes and managed to hold on the same boat when it came back on top of the lake. He says that some of his colleagues were rescued by fishermen who saw them from a distance.

The other survivors are Juma Ogola,Masuri Kizito,Deborah Nekesa, Sandra Malibu and Tadeo Awori, all residents of Luminho Busia district. Ben Okae, the Namayingo District Police Commander says the death of the two people, brings to four the number of people who have drowned in the lake within a space of one week.

Early last, two people including a one year drowned after their boat capsized on their way to Buhoba landing site. Okae advises residents to avoid traveling on the lake without life jackets under harsh weather conditions.
