Two people are confirmed dead and 32 others injured after a grenade blast in the Rwandan capital of Kigali on Friday night.

The blast took place at Ubumwe, Kabahizi Cell in Gitega Sector of Nyarugenge District.

The blast is said to have taken place at around 6:50pm.

According to the Rwandan National Police spokesperson Theos Badege, two people sustained serious injuries while 30 got minor injuries. Badege further reveals that the critically injured were immediately evacuated to the University Teaching Hospital in Kigali and Kacyiru Police Hospital where they are under intensive care.

Meanwhile police say they have one person in custody in connection to the blast. Badege says the police have cordoned off the blast scene to gather more evidence.

The blast is the second this year after the first one in March near Kimironko market in Kigali, killed one person and seriously injured six others.
