Four Killed in Kasese Palace Scuffle

Four people were killed on Sunday in a scuffle at the palace of Charles Wesley Mumbere, the King of Rwenzururu Kingdom in Kasese town. The dead include two Uganda People's Defense Force soldiers, a royal guard and a boda boda motorist.

He identifies the dead soldiers as Lance Corporal Joseph Barekye and Private Edmon Tumwesigye who were attached to Mulongoti barracks on the outskirts of Kasese town. According to Maj. Kakurungu, the soldiers were killed shortly Corporal David Indiro, an aide to Mumbere shot dead a royal guard and injured another.

 
 
Kakurungu says Indiro shot at the royal guards following a scuffle inside the palace. Indiro was picked up for investigations into the circumstances that led to the shooting of the royal guards.
 
 
Lydia Tumushabe, the Rwenzori Regional police spokesperson, says they picked the bodies of the dead and handed them over to Kasese Municipal health center III mortuary. She declined to comment on the unidentified boda boda motorcyclist who was shot inside the palace.
 
 
Major Ronald Kakurungu says they will investigate the shootings jointly with police and Rwenzururu Kingdom. The shooting comes four days after another Rwenzururu royal guard was shot dead by the Police Flying Squad for allegedly attempting to grab a gun during arrest.
