Uganda Cranes rivals Burkina Faso have reclaimed top position of Group D in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) after a 1-0 away win to Comoros on Sunday.

Alain Traore scored the late goal 10 minutes to time to make sure Burkina Faso stay on course to qualify for the event in Gabon.

The win for Burkina Faso means Uganda who won 2-1 away to Botswana on Saturday now drop to second place ahead of the last group games in September. Uganda Cranes however lead the table of the teams likely to qualify as second best.

Top teams in each of the groups automatically qualify, while the two best second placed teams also qualify. Uganda leads the table of best second with 10 points, while Liberia who host Angola later tonight are second on 9 points, while Cape Verde are third with 9 points.

Uganda will host Comoros in the last group game in September, while Burkina Faso play host to Botswana. Uganda last appeared in the Afcon event in 1978 when it was held in Ghana.

In other matches played on Sunday DR Congo humbled home side Madagascar 6-1, while Kenya stopped Congo Brazzaville 2-1 in Nairobi. The Black Stars of Ghana also qualified for the 2017 Afcon after a 2-0 away win over Mauritius.  The other teams that have so far qualified include; Morocco, Cameroon, Algeria, Senegal, Egypt, Guinea Bissau and hosts Gabon.
