It was all celebrations and fireworks at Namboole Stadium this evening as Uganda Cranes beat Kenya to win their 13th Cecafa Tusker senior Challenge Cup trophy.

The Cranes led by skipper Hassan Wasswa beat archrivals Kenya 2-1. 

An own goal in the 26th minute by Harambee Stars skipper Anthony Kimani gave Cranes the lead, but the skipper soon got another for his side five minutes to to end to make it 1-1.

But in a space of three minutes the Ugandan team urged on by the home fans got a free kick that was quickly taken by Godfrey Walusimbi and Geoffrey Kizito nodded in past Duncan Ochieng. It was all celebrations after the final whistle as Uganda collected her 13th Cecafa titles, while their rivals remain at 5 titles.

Cranes skipper Hassan Wasswa said he was proud of leading the Cranes to victory. Especially so as this was his first tournament win as  captain the national team. 

The earlier game saw Zanzibar as surprise winners over their brothers from Tanzania in a 6-5 in a penalty shootout to settle for third place. The game had ended 1-1 with Mwinyi Kazimoto giving the Tanzanians an early 20th minute lead, but Ally Othman made tied the scores with five minutes to full time.

Kevin Yodan missed the vital penalty for Tanzania, while Sabri Makane converted the winning penalty for Zanzibar.

The Cranes got a trophy and US$30,000, the runner-up US$20,000, and the third placed team US$10,000. Uganda’s Brian Umony was also voted player of the tournament, while Robert Ssentongo also picked the top scorer’s trophy.
