Uganda's women's basketball team, Gazelles make a return to the AfroBasketball competition when they face Gabon in the opening game on Thursday in Yaounde, Cameroon.

Coach Timothy Odeke told URN that although his team is not very exposed at the international level, they are going all out to give a good account. "We need to start well against Gabon if we hope to play till the later stages of the event," said Odeke.

Odeke said although they will miss key players Claire Lamunu who joined University in the US and Sharon Karungi who is yet to arrive from her base in the US, they will use the players

Peace Proscovia who also captained the She Cranes at the Netball World Cup in Australia together with Martha Soigi, Maureen Amoding and Flavia Oketcho are expected to play key roles for the Gazelles.

But Gabon's coach Servais Essongue has said they will not be push overs as they won  the FIBA Africa Zone 3 qualifiers. He said they are in Cameroon to prove a point that they are a good team.

After being dropped from the All Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville because the government did not have enough money to take more athletes, the Gazelles will be out to try and win support by performing well.

Uganda is grouped in Pool A alongside Gabon, Cameroon, Mozambique, South Africa and favourites Mali who won the All Africa Games title in Congo Brazzaville last week. Group B has Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Guinea, Nigeria and Senegal. On Friday the Gazelles will take on Mozambique.

The event which will bring together 12 nations will climax on October 3 and the best team will also clinch the only direct qualifying berth for the 2016 Olympic Games.
