The hosts beat Zambia 67-50 in their last match of the Africa Netball Championship on Thursday night at the MTN Arena in Kampala.

Uganda finished with 10 points after winning all the five matches, while Malawi who are ranked sixth by the International Netball Federation (INF) came second. "We are happy that we have finally captured this trophy. We played well and deserved it," Uganda's captain Peace Proscovia.

Proscovia who features for Loughborough Lightening in England called for more support for the game of Netball.

Uganda who also took part in the 2015 Netball World Cup in Australia started the campaign with a 72-29 win over Botswana before they picked another 69-31 victory against Namibia. In the third game they stopped Malawi 66-43 and humbled Zimbabwe 61-45.

Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga who watched the final was all praises for the team. "I am happy that our team remained determined despite some challenges and still won the trophy," said Kadaga after the final. Uganda's team scored a total of 335 goals in the five game and conceding 198.

State Minister for Sports, Charles Bakkabulindi thanked the team for lifting the Ugandan flag high. "They have showed that Uganda has abundant talent in Netball," added the Minister.

Susan Anek, President of the Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) thanked all the teams for making it to Uganda for the tournament. "The level of play was very competitive and I am happy that as hosts we won the trophy," added Anek. Uganda win will improve their world rankings where they are currently placed 13th.

The competition attracted Malawi, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and hosts Uganda. Africa's top team South Africa did not take part because of a busy schedule.
