A new family planning campaign aimed at scaling up awareness on family planning is to be launched in Uganda before being rolled out to other African countries.
The It Takes Two Campaign aims to raise awareness of and demand for family planning information and services to men and women around the world.
The campaign, an initiative of American organisations the Global Poverty Project and Women Deliver, was launched today during the 3rd global conference on women and girls in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.
Jill Sheffield, the founder of Women Deliver said Uganda, was chosen because of President Yoweri Museveni's strong and generous commitment he made at the family planning meeting in London in 2012 in which he pledged to support efforts towards increasing family planning services.
At the London meeting, governments, including Uganda's, as well as non-governmental organisations and donors pledged 4.6 billion shillings towards promoting family planning.
Sheffield said another reason for choosing Uganda and other African countries was because they have low contraceptives usage and high maternal and child mortality rates.
The 2013 maternal mortality rate for Uganda is 438 mothers per 100,000 live births, meaning Uganda won't achieve the Millennium Development Goal 5 which aims at reducing maternal mortality to a quarter of 1990 levels by the target date of 2015.
Uganda has a target of 131 deaths per 100,000. The commonest causes of maternal deaths in Uganda are anaemia and excessive bleeding during birth.
Marie Stopes and Partners in Population and Development Africa Regional Office will be the local implementer of the three-year campaign.
The other Sub-Saharan African countries to benefit from the 2.6 billion dollar campaign are Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zambia, South Africa, Malawi, Nigeria and Angola.
Sheffield said the It Takes Two family planning campaign is important because when people plan their lives they live healthier and successful lives.
She said the campaign will not only engage communities but promote investment in girls because, as she put it, "investing in girls and women pays", adding that it is not just the right thing to do but the smart thing too.
Hugh Evans, the co-founder and chief executive officer of The Global Poverty Project, said 222 million women in the developing world lack access to modern contraception because they are actively denied information and services. He termed this 'a violation of women's human rights'.
Evans revealed that the It Takes Two Campaign will use social media and other online platforms, mobile phone applications, social and community events, activism, petitions and other creative ways like designing condom wrappers to create awareness.
The best designed condom wrapper will actually be taken up, produced and distributed globally.
Evans said in Uganda and other countries that have low internet penetration and tech-savvy citizenry, specific and tailor-made techniques will be used, like using sms platforms, community events and so forth.
Erin Heatheron, a supermodel and It Takes Two Ambassador, said the campaign especially targets men because, as she put it, 'it takes two to tangle'.
