The incident happened on Friday night when unknown thugs attacked Jetset Forex Bureau which is located close to Standard Chartered Bank in Gulu central business district.
The thugs, who were driving a saloon car bearing South Sudanese registration numbers 317R on the front and 318R on the rear plate, stormed Jetset Forex Bureau at about 7:30pm and shot and injured a security guard who was on duty.
John Bosco Ozelle, the Officer in-charge of Crime in Gulu Central Police Station, said the thugs stormed the forex bureau and shot and injured the guard on duty before taking off with an estimated 40million shillings.
Officer Ozelle said that preliminary police investigations indicated that the thugs who were communicating in Acholi dialect were five in number and they were in company of a woman who remained in the car.
Ozelle said a woman has since reported to police claiming that the thugs had asked her to direct them to where they can change South Sudanese pounds. She allegedly told police that she directed them to Jetset Forex Bureau but became suspicious when they delayed inside.
The lady told the police that the thugs had familiar faces and that she could be able to identify them if they were arrested.
Earlier reports had indicated that the person who died in the shootout was a customer but police now say the unidentified dead man is one of the thugs who was shot and killed as he attempted to escape.
The incident paralyzed Gulu town as shop owners hurriedly closed their shops.
Security officials also blocked all the roads leading to the scene of the crime for the rest of the night.
