Dr Abdul Kadir Balonde is the new chairman of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council-UMSC. Balonde was confirmed yesterday by the UMSC general assembly that convened at Gaddafi National Mosque conference hall. He takes over from city businessman Hassan Basajjalaba who was successfully impeached by the UMSC joint session on June 26. Basajjalaba was accused of failure to perfume his duties as UMSC chairman, abuse of office, theft of Muslim properties and alleged forgery amongst other issue. However, the businessman denied all the accusation and instead attempted to impeach the Mufti, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan in vain. Nsereko Mutumba, the UMSC public relations officer says that the confirmation of Dr Balonde was long over due because there are many pending issues that need to be addressed urgently. Speaking to journalists shortly after taking oath of office Dr Balonde said that his immediate task will be to operationalize the World Islamic Call College that was donated to Uganda by Muamar Gadaffi, the Libyan president. He also promised to ensure the expansion of Muslim districts across the country as some Muslims have demanding for the creation of new districts. Currently the Muslim general assembly is constituted by representatives from 35 Muslim districts, and organizes general elections.
