UN To Conduct Outreaches During Anniversary Celebrations

United Nations staffs in Uganda are to carry out numerous outreach programs in four Kampala city Divisions as part of their activities to commemorate the 72nd UN day. Rosa Malango, the UN Resident Coordinator disclosed this at a press briefing ahead of the celebration scheduled for October 24th 2017.
 

She said United Nations Staff from various Agencies together with representatives from development Partners, Civil Society Organizations and local leaders will get involved in the outreach program to assist the least advantaged people in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development slogan "Leaving no one behind".

Malango explained that their outreach in Kawempe Division will cover Health and Sanitation, Nakawa Food and Nutrition, Rubaga Education and Makindye Environment and Urban Development. She said the activities will be in partial of fulfillment of the 17 goals under the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.


The UN General Assembly adopted the Agenda 2030 Sustainable Development Goals on September 25, 2015 in New York. The 2030 Agenda forms the new global development framework anchored around 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a total of 169 targets covering economic, social development, and environmental protection. 

 
Ambassador Arthur Kafeero, says their outreach in Kawempe division will include cleaning Kalerwe market, carrying out participatory hand washing and water treatment in the promotion of Sustainable Development Goal number 3 and 6.

 
He explained that in Nakawa Division the United Nations activities will include planting vegetables and banana trees at the farmer's market school for produce, agricultural activities and sensitizing pupils about food security and good nutrition in line with the goal to promote Zero hunger. 
 
 
Kafeero who represented Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Kuteesa said in Rubaga division, they will visit Kampala School for the Physically handicapped to play board games with the pupils, listen to songs by the pupils and engage them in fine art and crafts in line with Goal number 10 and 4 of the sustainable development goals, which seeks to reduce inequality and promote quality education. 

 
In Makindye, the ambassador said that the activities will include tree planting in line with SDG number 11 and 13, which speak about sustainable cities and communities and climate action respectively. 24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. UN Day commemorates the anniversary when the UN charter came into force in 1945.
