A cloud of uncertainty hangs over participation of several boda boda riders as Mondo Ride faces a bleak future. This has left a bag full of worries among nearly 350 drivers recruited in and around Kampala to grapple with over the past weeks and months.
The much-hyped multinational online transportation network company that started its operations in Uganda, in February this year seems to have withdrawn from the market, affecting 350 riders who had been recruited.
The company provides Taxi hire services, which can be accessed through the Mondo ride mobile app. Developed Soft mills Technology International in 2013, the App provides commuting Taxi services with a single click to move around the city.
Travellers request for transport through their smartphones, which is routed to drivers attached to the company. Mondo Ride is available on Android and iOS.
Issa Matovu, a Boda Boda rider in Wandegeya, says that they have waited in vain without hearing from management of Mondo Ride.

According to Matovu, they were approached by a Mondo ride agent who collected data from them including driving permits, National Identity Cards and Local Council One letter.
He, however, says that the same agent was seen registering cyclists to join another online transport company.

One required either a car or a licensed motorcycle with 3rd party insurance, a National Identity Card, KCCA permit and a smartphone to be able to enrol with Mondo Ride. If approved, a boda-boda rider was to receive a reflector jacket and two helmets.
Nelson Mangulano, another Boda Rider says he is joining Safe Boda after he found the same manager who had previously recruited them in Mondo, now operating with Taxify.

Vincent Lule, also a Boda Boda rider at Posta Stage in Wandegeya says they are disappointed with the way Mondo Ride raised his expectations

Just like Uber, Taxify, Friendship Taxi and Quick Taxi, the other online transport companies operating in the Ugandan market, Mondo Ride was to enable locals access hire services through Mondo ride mobile app.
Mondo Ride was founded by Troels Andersen with funding from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt in 2015. It commenced its operations in Dubai and subsequently moved to Kenya in February 2016, to Tanzania in 2017 and in February 2018 it hit the Ugandan Market.
Attempts by URN to speak to Victor Ochieng, the Country Manager, Mondo Ride were futile.
Edmund Onwech, the company's social media and marketing officer when contacted declined to comment arguing that he was not in a position to comment about what was happening in the company.
