Over 370,000 candidates on Monday began their Uganda Certificate of Education examinations starting with Geography.

UNEB secretary Matthew Bukenya however told URN in a telephone interview on Monday, that there was a delay in examinations reaching parts of Karamoja especially in Abim district because the roads were impassable due to heavy rains.

He added that their trucks had gone through Katakwi and Namalu route and had delivered the examinations to most parts of Karamoja by 4am on Monday morning. In other areas like Kapchorwa that are hilly, examinations reached last evening. In Maracha, Obongi and Nebbi in West Nile, the examinations got there on Sunday evening.

Quoting the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura, Bukenya said the police had given the trucks transporting the examination papers ample security to all police stations without any incident. School heads are supposed to pick the papers from the police stations. 

When asked how UNEB was managing given the inflation that has hit a 28 percentage mark, Bukenya said they had to cut costs where necessary. He however explained that there are areas like fuel and allowances, where it was difficult to compromise to get an incident free examination.

When asked whether the Walk to Work demonstration had affected the sitting of examinations, Bukenya said the examinations had not been affected.

Bukenya said he has visited distribution centres in Kawempe, Old Kampala, Katwe but there is no incident reported.

Bukenya adds that examinations are underway in most parts of country.
