At least 18 people are confirmed dead and nine others injured as more details emerge from Bududa district where landslides buried two villages on Monday afternoon.

Catherine Ntabadde, the Uganda Red Cross Society Communications Director, says one person has also been rescued without any injuries.

Ntabadde says rescue workers digging through the rubble have rescued nine people who are seriously injured by the landslides and have been rushed to Bududa Hospital by the Uganda Red Cross officials.

She says at least 15 homes have been confirmed buried by the mudslides that buried Bwakasola and Bunalembwa villages in Mwalukaru parish in Bulucheke Sub-county during a heavy downpour.

John Nambeshe, the Bududa Local Council Five chairperson had earlier put the number of people in each of the villages at 80. He explained that the victims included school children who had just returned to their homes for lunch.

He said the landslide had first hit the area in the night and destroyed several acres of crops but the locals allegedly declined to evacuate from the place.

Nassan Wanasolo, the LC 3 chairperson of Bulucheke Sub County, says at least nine members of his family are still missing.

Today’s landslides come just three weeks after two people were killed and 50 others displaced by landslides in Bugimwela village, Bumasifa Sub County in Sironko district.

In March 2010 more than 300 people were killed by landslides in Bududa district.
