Violence As Motorists Launch Mob Justice Campaign In Luweero

Angry boda boda motorists have set a vehicle ablaze and attempted to raid Wobulenzi police station to protest the rampant robbery of motorcycles in Luweero district.  It all started on Wednesday evening after police picked up Hussein Sserugo, as the prime suspect in the theft of a motorcycle belonging to Sadik Mubarak. 
Angry motorists attempted to raid the police station last evening and lynch the suspect prompting police to open fire to repulse them. Police relocated Sserugo to Luweero Central Police Station for safe custody. However, this afternoon, the motorists launched an operation to get rid of suspected motorcycle robbers. They intercepted a Raum vehicle registration number UAS 322Z at Katikamu trading center on suspicion that it was being used to transport motorcycle robbers. 

Asuman Kasujja, one of the boda boda motorists says that the driver of the vehicle and a suspected robber fled for their lives before the motorists set the vehicle ablaze. Kasujja however says that, the motorists managed to apprehend one of the suspected robbers identified as Haruna Ssekmatte, the brain behind the motorcycle theft and beat him into pulp. Ssekmatte is currently battling for his life at Bombo Military hospital, where he was rushing for treatment. 

Following the mob action, Justus Asiimwe, the Luweero District Police Commander convened a crisis meeting to calm down the motorists in vain. Sam Sserunjogi, the Katikamu sub county LC 3 chairperson says that more than 10 motorcycles have been robbed and two motorists killed in his area alone over the last one month. He says several other motorists such a Byarugaba Nsubuga, Erias Nsereko, Mubarak Sadik, Geoffrey Ssemugabi and Geoffrey Ssendege among others are hospitalized after they were beaten by thugs and their motorcycles robbed. 

Francis Kavuma, one of the injured motorist says he was attacked by iron bar robbers who took away his motor cycle. Kavuma says they have resolved to deal with the robbers since police has failed to protect them.

Lameck Kigozi, the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson admits motorcycle robberies are on the increase. Kigozi who condemns, the mob justice says they started night operations to net the thugs.

By time of filling this story police had deployed anti-riot cops led Eugene Elwaru in Katikamu trading center and Wobulenzi town council to stop any fresh cases of mob justice.  At least two people were killed and three others injured in a similar operation launched by boda boda motorists in Luweero town to get rid of suspected motorcycle robbers.
