The police in Mubende are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 26-year-old woman whose body has been recovered from her home.

Police identified the deceased as Mirere Jackie, a resident of Kibaati, a suburb in Mubende town council.

Dan Ampadde, the Officer in-charge Mubende police station, says that the deceased is likely to have been gang-raped before she was strangled to death.

Ampadde says the incident occurred in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, but police and local residents only discovered Mirere's body this afternoon.

Mirere's single room in Kibaabti was also ransacked by her killers who stole most of her property.

Ampadde says police came to the conclusion that she was gang-raped before being killed because ten used condoms were found scattered in the room.

Mirere is one of the 18 prostitutes who were arrested last month by police. Police argued then that prostitutes often connive with criminal gangs and aid them in their illegal activities.

Ampadde says the body has been handed over to the medics in Mubende regional referral hospital to carry out a post mortem.

Although he would not divulge their identities, Ampadde went on to reveal that police already has four suspects in custody in connection to Mirere's death.

Traders who spoke to Uganda Radio Network, shortly after the discovery of the woman's body, expressed concern at the growing number of prostitutes in the town.
