Police in Fort Portal are holding a 30-year-old mother for allegedly starving her child for over three days.

Annet Night, a resident of Rwengoma B in West division, Fort Portal municipality was arrested on Wednesday morning at around 10:00am.

She was arrested by the Kalita bus park police and local leaders following a tip off by the concerned residents, who reported the matter to the area chairman, Patrick Zabukombe.

Lucia Asaba, one of the residents told reporters that Night prepares food and eats alone in her room without giving her son, Christopher Muhumuza. After eating, she leaves the child locked up in the house and goes out to do her own things. Residents suspect she is a commercial sex worker.

According to Zabukombe, the mother locked the boy in the house for the last three days without food. He says that on Tuesday, Night tied the child with ropes on the tree and left for her work but he was only rescued by one Mama Umaru, a neighbor who untied him and spent a night at her place.

On Wednesday morning, when Night returned home, she reportedly got the child from mama Umaru’s home, beat him seriously and later tied his arms and legs with ropes and locked him in her rented room.

On interrogation, Annet Night revealed that the father of the child, one Deo Sanyu of Irinda village, Kabahango parish in Buheesi Sub County, last saw the child when he was one year old and does not give her any help. She says the child was feeding on her money which the father does not give her.

The child and the mother have all been taken to Kalita bus park police in Kisenyi, Fort Portal municipality.

Bakari Muga Bashir, the Western region police spokesperson confirms the arrest and detention of Night and says she is to be transferred to Fort Portal police station for further investigation. Muga says she will be taken to court on charges of child abuse.
