Woman Held For Stealing Baby from Gulu Regional Referral Hospital

Gulu Police are holding a woman accused of stealing a two-weeks- old baby from Gulu regional Referral Hospital on Tuesday evening. The suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Concy Atoo, a resident of Layibi division in Gulu Municipality. Betty Angaika, the mother of the baby says Atoo approached her and volunteered to help her because she was feeling weak.

She claims that she trusted her because she had gone days without eating but didn’t suspect that she had intentions of stealing her baby. Angaika who was lying helplessly on the hospital floor says that she turned on Tuesday to check on her baby but she was not where to be seen. She searched the entire hospital for Atoo and her daughter in vain forcing her to report to management. Police mounted a search for the suspect and found her at her home with the baby.

Atoo denied stealing the baby saying that she given the baby her mother who was unable to breastfeed her. Pasca Apiyo, the deputy Director Gulu Regional Referral Hospital says this is the first time they are registering a case of baby theft at the hospital. She says there is need to increase vigilance and security especially in the maternity to avoid such incidents in the future.

Apiyo says the hospital management will also push out all idlers from the hospital. Denis Odoch, the Gulu District Police Commander says that baby has been handed over to its mother. He says that they are investigating motive of the suspect and whether or not she could have had intentions of taking the baby for human sacrifice. Cases of child in hospitals have become rampant.

Just In September this year two babies were reportedly stolen from Mulago hospital. Police advises expectant mothers to come with helpers who can help them take care of the new born babies.
