Saturday Byamugisha has been declared the new Chairperson for Kabale District Taxi Operators and Drivers Cooperative Union. He was elected in heated election amidst tight security deployment on Thursday. Byamugisha garnered 55 votes to trounce the incumbent Justus Muhwezi who got 42 votes.
Byamugisha has been serving as Muhwezi’s Vice in the last term comprising four years before he turned against and contested on the Chairperson seat. Simon Kwikiriza was elected as the Association’s secretary-general after getting 54 votes defeating Ambrose Ariho, who got 43 votes. Godfrey Taremwa was declared unopposed as the Treasurer.
The secret ballot election was presided over by Erasmus Nabimanya, Kabale District Commercial Officer. Some drivers and operators first protested demanding that voting be held by lining, but were overpowered by the Majority who demanded a secret ballot.
