Barbados emerged victorious in their second encounter with Zimbabwe at the Netball World Cup 2023 in Cape Town, securing a decisive 62-45 win in a Group E match. This outcome marked a reversal of roles from the 2019 Netball World Cup in Liverpool when Zimbabwe had claimed bragging rights with a 66-41 victory.

Throughout the game, Zimbabwe provided court time to all their players, but Carla Boyce from Barbados remained the only player who didn’t participate in Cape Town, and she is yet to make her international debut.

Initially, it appeared that Zimbabwe could keep up with their opponents, as the scoreline remained within reach. The Zimbabwean team frustrated Barbados with a handful of much-needed interceptions and deflections.

However, as the first 15 minutes progressed, the Bajan Gems, led by shooter Kadeen Corbin, settled into the game, initiating a run of successive goals. Barbados also effectively limited Zimbabwe’s possession, maintaining control throughout the second quarter. At halftime, Barbados held a comfortable 35-16 lead.

The differing reactions from the two benches reflected the game’s progression. While the Barbados players were enthusiastic and supportive, the Zimbabwean coaching staff expressed frustration, continuously shouting instructions up and down the court. Zimbabwe made frequent changes to their team setup, switching and moving players constantly. On the other hand, Barbados made their first substitution in the last quarter, with Teresa Howell being replaced by Tonisha Rock-Yaw at center.

Zimbabwe showcased a much-improved performance in the second half, outscoring the Bajan Gems by two goals (29-27). Despite their better showing, the Gems’ disappointing run of performances continued in Cape Town, considering their eighth-place finish in the previous World Cup four years ago.
