Construction of the UGX 4.12 billion Kisoro Hospital isolation Unit has commenced.

The project, contracted to Geses Uganda Limited, is slated for completion within 12 months. It is funded by the government of Uganda, facilitated by the Ministry of Health, and supported by the World Bank through the Uganda Covid-19 Response and Emergency Preparedness Project (UCREPP), as explained by George Otim, Commissioner in charge of Health Infrastructure at the Ministry of Health.

Otim further elaborates that out of 39 hospitals that applied for the project, only two—Kisoro and Isingiro district hospitals—were selected due to budgetary constraints.

Dr. Emmanuel Bahane, Superintendent of Kisoro Hospital, expresses relief at the initiative, citing the inconvenience caused by referring patients in need of isolation services to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, located approximately 75 kilometers away.

Robert Tukamuheebwa, Kisoro Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Abel Bizimana, Kisoro District LC5 Chairman, and Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, the area District Woman MP and State Minister for Security, view the construction of the isolation unit as a positive step towards improving the standard of Kisoro Hospital.

Peter Nkurunungi, Director of Geses Uganda Limited, assures timely completion of the project despite encountering rocky terrain that necessitates heavy machinery for excavation.
