Bus operators have called off their strike pending a meeting with the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works and Transport. The operators parked their coaches on Monday protesting the enforcement of the park user fees by the Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA.

However, a top manager in one of the bus companies told this website on Thursday that they had resumed their normal operations pending the outcome of their meeting with the ministry. The operators are expected to pay Shillings 2.4 million per annum for each coach through the Uganda Revenue Authority-URA portal.

The park user fees are provided for under the local government (Amendment of the Fifth Schedule) Statutory Instruments of 2000 that was approved by parliament and cabinet in May 2022. However, early this week the operators through the United Bus Operators Association rejected the enforcement of the park user fees, saying the money was exorbitant.

As a result, the Works Ministry has scheduled a meeting with the executive of the United Bus Operators Association on August 28th, 2023 to chat forward, according to a letter signed by Yasin Ssendaula on behalf of the permanent secretary.
