Mid-career journalists with solid track records, great future promise and demonstrated leadership in some aspect of journalism can apply for a fellowship at the University of Michigan.
The Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship, sponsored by the University of Michigan, brings exceptional journalists from the U.S. and abroad together for a year of academic study. Fellows devise a personalized plan of study with access to the courses and resources at the university. Twice-weekly seminars bring the best and the brightest from the worlds of journalism and academia directly to fellows.
Typically, 12 Americans are joined by six international colleagues. Fellows must obtain a leave of absence from September 1 through April and then return to their place of employment. All fellows must agree not to publish or broadcast during the fellowship, maintain Ann Arbor residency and attend all program seminars and meetings.
Applicants must have at least five years of professional experience and have work that appears regularly as an employee or freelancer. Print, broadcast and online journalists are eligible to apply. There are no academic prerequisites.
Fellows receive USD70,000 and have their tuition and travel costs covered by the program.
Applications for the 2012-2013 academic year are due no later than February 1, 2012.
