With increasing levels of unemployment among the youth in Uganda, the allure of a promising, well-paying job is always too strong. Many may disregard their inhibitions about what kind of job they will get.

For many, the fact that they could become victims of modern slavery may not cross their mind. This edition bring us the story of a Ugandan teacher who quit her job in Tanzania, hoping to benefit from the External Employment Scheme in Iraq, through the Uganda Veterans Development Ltd recruitment agency.

She got to Iraq, only to discover that she had been sold, for more money than she had ever earned. Her life in Iraq was punctuated by physical assault, rape and other forms of mistreatment.

Having been raised christian, she now had to dress up according to Muslim religious ways. Communication too became a problem, as she was hired out to an Iraqi master who only spoke Arabic.

The story is heart-rending, and it is only one of many. Good listening!
