Reports and images of impassable rural roads have dominated the media lately. Heavy vehicles stuck in several feet of mud, passenger vehicles wading through brown stagnant water and foot travelers holding their clothes up to keep them dry as they move on these roads, have become the posters of the rainy season.

From Insingiro to Kabale to Gulu to Mbale, this edition focuses on the state of rural roads, as Ugandans grapple with rising transport costs; but that is only when they are actually able to travel. In Karamoja, businessmen and other people spend days stuck on impassable roads.

When roads fill with water as bridges are washed away, farmers cannot take their produce to the market while traders fail to travel to the trading centers for new stock.

This edition also looks into the implications the bad roads have on the incomes of rural Ugandans, and the challenges to local governments as they constantly come under fire, for failure to fix the roads.
