New Appellate Judge Sworn In at East African Court of Justice

H.E Évariste Ndayishimiye, the Chairperson of the Summit of the East African Community Heads of State, presided over the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Judge of the East African Court of Justice in the Appellate Division, Hon. Justice Omar Othman Makungu from the United Republic of Tanzania. The ceremony took place at the Ntare State House in Bujumbura Tuesday.



Justice Makungu’s appointment was made in absentia during the 21st Extraordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State held in Bujumbura, Burundi, on May 31, 2023. As per Section 3 of the East African Community Oaths Act of 2019, the Summit designated the Chairperson of the Summit to oversee the swearing-in ceremony of the new Judge at a later date.


Justice Omar Othman Makungu, currently a Judge in the Court of Appeal of the United Republic of Tanzania, assumes his role in the East African Court of Justice’s Appellate Division, succeeding Lady Justice Sauda Mjasiri, who retired on June 19, 2023, having reached the mandatory retirement age of 70.


Following the taking of his Judicial Oath and Oath of Allegiance to the East African Community, the Chairperson of the Summit congratulated Justice Makungu and extended best wishes for his judicial responsibilities.
