Netizens Mourn the Passing of Artist Evelyn Lagu

Ugandans on social media are collectively mourning the loss of the renowned singer, backup artist, and actress, Evelyn Nakabira Lagu alias Evelyn Love. Lagu, 41, passed away on Sunday night shortly after returning home from the hospital.

She has been battling heart and kidney complications, leading to several hospital admissions. On Monday morning, news of her passing dominated various social media platforms in Uganda, with netizens expressing their heartfelt condolences. Local artist Eddy Kenzo shared a photo he had taken with Lagu just last Tuesday, expressing disbelief at her sudden departure. He posted, “You have fought a big battle, my sister. May your soul rest in peace.”

Art and culture reporter Gabriel Buule paid tribute to Evelyn Lagu, admiring her incredible strength. He mentioned how she always wore a smile and expressed gratitude amid ill health. “She could always smile and thank God every day while telling whoever cared that she would be okay. It’s sad that in our last message, she asked me to write about her upcoming show that will now never happen. Rest Well Evelyn Love,” Buule posted.

Francis Zaake, the Member of Parliament representing Mityana municipality, the area where the artist grew up, also expressed his condolences on his social media platforms. He offered his thoughts and prayers to Evelyn’s family, relatives, and her devoted fanbase during this difficult time.

After noticing her health problems, despite numerous fundraising efforts organized to support her medical treatment. Notably, one of the most successful fundraising drives contributed over Shillings 60 million to facilitate her treatment. The funds gathered were insufficient to fully support her medical treatment. However, displaying her resilience as an artist, she continued her musical career despite her illness.

She actively engaged in performances and other musical endeavors as a way to raise funds to support herself, choosing not to rely solely on handouts and demonstrating her determination to overcome her challenges. Tragically, at the time of her passing, Evelyn Lagu was planning an “Evelyn Love Charity Concert,” scheduled for October 28, 2023, in Kampala, an event that was aimed at raising funds and awareness for her medical condition. Earlier this year, some of her friends also put together resources and constructed a brand-new house for her and her children in Bujjuuko, wakiso.

Biography

Available information from various sources confirms that Evelyn Lagu was born on June 1, 1982, in the current-day Kalungu district. After the unfortunate loss of her parents, she was raised by her aunt in Mityana district. In terms of her education, she attended several institutions, including Aga Khan Primary School, Mityana SS, and Pride SS in Mityana for her O’ Level education. Later, she pursued her A’ Level education at St. Peter’s Busubizi, successfully completing it in 1999.

Evelyn Lagu’s musical journey commenced when she took on the role of a backup singer for some of the music industry’s most prominent artists, which served as the launching point for her remarkable career in the world of music. Additionally, she ventured into acting and was cast in various local films and dramas, showcasing her versatility and talent in the entertainment industry.
