Locals in Kaharo sub county,Kabale district are in panic over fresh highway robbery cases along Ntungamo-Kabale Highway.
According to locals, cases that used to be registered in the area about 10 years ago had ceased until recently when they resumed.
They say robbers target at night trucks on transit to and from Kabale, Rubanda, Kisoro ,Rwanda,Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo. Locals also say that pedestrians and those on motorcycles are not spared.
Led by Edmund Tumwesigye, Kaharo sub county, LC3 Chairman they say cases are common between Habufureeka (a border that separates Kabale and Rukiga districts) and Kabaraga hills.
They also say that robbers who tend to start showing up between 08:00PM to morning hours target trucks on humps and climbing slopes as they transport beans and maize flour among other goods, break into containers, throw sacks and boxes of goods as others pick and load them on small vehicles and motorcycles and run away.
Tumwesigye says that since mid this month (March, 2024), his office has registered more than 10 cases. Elly Maate, police spokesperson for Kigezi region says that security authorities are aware of the matter. He says that security authorities have already held a meeting and agreed to strengthen highway operations to have the culprits arrested.
