Police in Namisindwa district intervened to save a 65-year-old man from an enraged mob accusing him of aggravated defilement. The suspect, identified as Stephen Wamaliya, resides in Muyembe village, Butingu parish, Bungati sub-county, Namisindwa District. According to Nicolas Nasala, a resident of the area, Wamaliya was caught red-handed over the weekend, sexually assaulting three 12-year-old pupils from Bungati Primary School at his residence.

The residents, armed with various objects such as machetes, axes, sticks, and bricks, were determined to take the law into their own hands and lynch Wamaliya. However, the timely intervention of the police and the Local Council I (LCI) chairperson prevented this from happening.

Sam Namukongo, the LC I chairperson of Muyembe village, strongly condemned Wamaliya’s actions and emphasized that the law should be allowed to take its course. Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying that Wamaliya is in custody at Namisindwa Police Station, awaiting charges of aggravated defilement.
