Security forces in the Karamoja sub-region have issued a warning to the public, urging them to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety while attending screenings of Premier League matches. This caution comes in light of recent attacks that have occurred in major towns within the region, notably Moroto municipality, where suspected warriors have carried out isolated incidents of violence, including killings, at night.

The authorities are particularly concerned about the safety of those attending late-night football screenings. In September 2022, armed warriors attacked a video hall in Katanga ward, Moroto municipality resulting in the death of a football fan. Given these occurrences, security officials believe that the popularity of the English Premier League matches could attract larger crowds, increasing the risk of various crimes such as defilement, assaults, and rape.

Michael Longole, the Mt Moroto regional police spokesperson, emphasized that although the region is gradually experiencing improved security, it is important not to overlook isolated cases of attacks by warriors. He urged football fans to exercise caution and prioritize their personal safety while gathering at different locations to watch matches, especially those that kick off late at night.

Longole cautioned against extensive travel during nighttime hours, as this could compromise personal safety or lead to misunderstandings that might result in fatal consequences. While acknowledging that security forces will provide protection throughout the football season, Longole highlighted the fact that they cannot be present in every corner, making individual vigilance crucial.

He stressed that although security cannot completely restrict nighttime movements, it remains crucial to ensure personal safety. The security forces are collaborating closely with local leaders to enhance coordination and address any threats within the community effectively. It’s worth noting that the joint security forces in the region have undertaken successful efforts to collect illegal firearms and ammunition as part of the Usamala Kwa Wote operations launched in July 2021.

Since then, they have managed to confiscate 934 illegal guns and 6679 pieces of ammunition, contributing to overall peace and security in the area.
