In recent years, Uganda has seen a significant increase in the enrollment of special needs children in its school system. However, schools are struggling to meet the unique learning needs of these students, leaving them feeling like outsiders in their own classrooms.

Esther Kyozira, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIP), pointed out that while more students with special needs are in classrooms, their presence often seems more like a way to pass time rather than an opportunity to receive the education necessary to unlock their full potential.

Kyozira suggests that part of the solution to this problem lies in Uganda finally passing its long-awaited inclusive education policy. Such a policy would delineate the necessary steps and expectations for all stakeholders, aiming to turn inclusive education from a concept into a reality.
